Recycle: Paper Chain Decoration

kitten plays with holiday garland paper chainA paper chain is an easy,  mess-free art project –  easy, fun cooperative learning that I used quite often when teaching Art Class in Elementary School.  You can hang paper chains as festive party decorations, or you can just make them for fun.

Christmas paper strips for paper chain decoration Step 1: Choose your paper.   We recycled my old scrapbook paper. I have A LOT of scrapbook paper that I do not use. It has been in my closet for over ten years and this will be the perfect way to recycle it.  My daughter and I looked through my very tall stack of colored and printed papers, searching for Thanksgiving and Christmas theme colors that went well together. TIP **If you are not a scrap booker, leftover Christmas wrapping paper also works very well.

Step 2:  Cut your paper. Try 1″ by 8.5 long.  Or size as needed, all strips should be the same size if possible, unless you plan to make some links smaller than others. I took my scrapbook paper to an office supply store and used their heavy duty paper cutter to cut mine into strips. It was quick, accurate and easy way to cut many at once. For small children, you may want to draw lines on the paper with a ruler and have them practice cutting their strips with scissors.

tabby kitten playing in paperchain christmas decorationStep 3: Tape, glue or staple the ends of the strip into a ring. Weave the second ring into place, and tape, glue or staple it and so on. Create a pattern with the different colors/designs and repeat the pattern. This is a great way to teach small children what a pattern is.  Make it as long as needed.

***Get creative: make a necklace,  christmas wreath,  and garland for tree. Use single rings as napkin rings for your dinner table!

We used our paper chains as festive garland for Thanksgiving and Christmas decoration for our November “recycled rescue kitten photo shoot”. The kittens really enjoyed playing in the paper chain garland. They poked their paws through the holes to pick it up and one of them got a ring stuck on its nose while trying to chew it!  It was adorable and fun. We also used paper chains to decorate the kitten cages and tables at our adoption events at Petsmart.

Here are a few photos from our November rescue kitten photo shoot with paper chains:

Give your old Recycled Ribbon a Swirl …

Kitten plays with orange ribbon

Last year, at the end of Fall Season, I stumbled upon a close-out of Halloween and Thanksgiving themed spools of wired ribbon at my favorite craft store: Michaels.  I knew there would be a use for them so I purchased them and stored them away.  This year, as I was unpacking my fall decorations, there they were just waiting there for me to use them. Hmmmm…..  useful for making pretty bows, but too ordinary. So we just began to unroll the recycled ribbon on our photo table in the kitty room and this is what happened next….

You would not believe how much fun the kittens had playing inside the ribbon swirls!

This shoot was taken in home settings using available light, Canon Mark III, 100 mm canon lens. Settings: f2.8 ss125 iso 250.

Halloween Boo … from the Phantom Kitty

Phantom Kitten Halloween BOOWith just days before Halloween, it’s time to get the fun rolling with some Halloween BOO.  What is a Halloween BOO? It is one of my family’s most favorite traditions at Halloween time!  The kids see it as a way of getting away with the old “ding-dong-ditch”.  I see it as a way of spreading Holiday Fun!
A Halloween BOO is sometimes called “ghosting” or “the phantom”. It is a tradition very similar to “secret Santa”.  It usually takes place in neighborhoods, however it could be in a workplace.  My family and I make up 2-3 bags or baskets of yummy treats, we print off a few BOO Poems, and then sneak out into the night (of course dressed in black) and secretly deliver them – ding-dong-ditch and leave it at the doorstep!
In turn, the lucky BOO-ees are asked to BOO two other neighbors, leading to a chain reaction–and lots of BOO-eautiful Halloween fun!
To start a BOO in your neighborhood, DOWNLOAD the PHANTOM KITTY BOO card from the link below. Make a small gift basket for each BOO-ee on your list and add a copy of the BOO card and, here comes the fun! Get all dressed up in black, grab those flashlights, and deliver the BOO’s secretly to a your neighbor’s doorstep. For even more fun, stick around inconspicuously, and watch your neighbors’ reaction!

For all of my TECHY friends out there use the link below and share it!  TWEET it, RT, POST it, SHARE it, LINK it, PIN it, and use it as your cell phone wallpaper….

Ready? Set? BOO … let the Halloween Phantom Kitty BOO for YOU!   MOST of all, Have a safe and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Here is what it says: “You’ve been BOO-ed! It’s your turn now… to pass it on, I’ll tell you how. Choose a neighbor, friend or anyone, Who needs some special “spooky” fun!  And when you’ve made your secret pick,  Let Halloween kitten do the “trick”!”

Bring in the focus with a splash of color – colorize tutorial

Colorsplash_LIThis is a fun way to bring extra attention to a particular area of a busy or almost too colorful image.   It will definitely “draw” the viewer’s focus to exactly where you want it to be on the image. Colorizing in Photoshop can be accomplished in many different ways, this is just one way to colorize.  I think this is one of the easiest ways and should only take less than ten minutes.  We will change the image to black and white then using a mask and a paint brush, we will bring a splash of color back.  Enjoy!

The kitten photographed by Kelly Richardson in this image is a rescue kitten that has been in foster care since she was just 4 weeks old. She was adopted almost immediately within hours after her image was uploaded to the adoption website. She is extremely sweet and affectionate and it was not hard to fall in love with her while taking her photos. This image is also part of our LuvKelly Recycles Campaign for November, and is available for licensing on greeting cards and such, along with many others from the shoot. Capture the Colors of Fall – SEPTEMBER

Autumn photo shoot kitten

Capture the Colors of Fall with earth tones and rich reds, oranges and yellows.

LuvKelly Recycles 2015 = “Save the Kittens + Save the Earth” campaign continues …

*LuvKelly Recycles Photoshoot for SEPTEMBER. The adorable kittens photographed above are two from a litter of four that were found abandoned in a house in Mims.  They were rescued at just 4 weeks old.   They were very playful and curious, and it didn’t take them long to investigate our materials and props that we used. Their names are Ari and Autumn.  Ari, the orange and white striped tabby loved to play hide and seek inside the pumpkin as we teased him with our feather toys.  Autumn was more shy, but felt very comfortable side-by-side with her brother inside the pumpkin.  You can see from the photo, Ari is the troublemaker 🙂 It turns out their coloring worked purr-fectly with our colors in the photoshoot.  They were a joy to work with!

About the Materials we used: We recycled the carved out pumpkins – we used them last year for a Fall photo shoot.  We got them from Michaels Craft Store and used an exacto knife to cut the holes.  To make it different from last year, we replaced the orange fleece  background with a natural brown burlap material, and added more color. We collected an assortment of pine cones from outdoors. We used artificial leaves and colored berries from an old centerpiece we took apart. This shoot was taken in home settings using available light, Canon Mark III, 100 mm canon lens. Settings: f2.8 ss125 iso 250.

In the Kitchen with Sugar and Flower – AUGUST

Each month Kelly Richardson and her team of caring assistants are creating a special pet photo shoot using recycled items that can be found around the house with rescue kittens that were saved and fostered by volunteers at local no-kill rescue organizations in Orlando. We have great hopes that these photoshoot tutorials will inspire creativity and raise awareness for the planet earth and the rescue kittens.
The theme for the LuvKelly Recycles photoshoot for the month of August is:  In the Kitchen with Sugar & Flower.   I knew I was going to be photographing these two adorable kittens. They were just rescued from the shelter and didn’t even have names yet.  I wanted to compliment their beautiful gray fur with something that also contained gray. I sat in my kitchen with a cup of coffee brainstorming… what unique recycled items can I use for this shoot that will really make their gray color pop? And suddenly  it came to me. Actually it was sitting right in front of me as I was getting my second cup of coffee.  The sugar and flour canisters! They would be a perfect way to compliment their color, and they are just the right size!   I proceeded to empty all of the sugar and flour into ziploc baggies, and shine them up for the kitchen kittens photo shoot.  After that, it was pretty easy to name these two cuties – it was only natural for them to be named kitchen kittens Sugar and Flower.
Kitchen KittensFor the background, I wanted to continue with the pure, clean, solid kitchen counter look.  At the same time, I wanted to pop the gray in there too. I knew the blankets I had would not do.
FR_2641T copySo I found some vinyl laminate squares that imitate a marble stone. I taped four together two for the bottom and two for the top and put them on my photo table.  see photo left.
TIP: It is important that you always take a photo of your background without the props and animals. see example.  This photo of the background will have many uses in the future:  to add canvKitchen Kittensas to the image later to make it a tall 5×7 greeting card (see example below), and as a pattern background see above.

Relax it’s Summertime – JULY

SLDR_4888_relax6x2

This is what it means to relax.

Memoirs of the Summertime Beach House…

I sink deep down into the comfy cushion couch, I lean my head back onto the soft cashmere pillows.  I am surrounded by an orange glow of golden sunlight that glistens off the wooden floors around me. Through the open door I can see the warm, white sandy beach path, leading the way to the oceans’ edge.  I can smell the salty spray, while I listen to the constant purr of the rolling waves. Wall to wall, at every turn, I feel immersed in peace and calm. – Kelly R.

2015 LuvKelly Recycles Monthly Photography Tutorial Series JULY- Summertime Kitten Relax

To continue with our monthly LuvKelly Recycles with rescue kittens, for July, we wanted to  share this intense feeling of relaxation as described in the Memoirs of the Summertime Beach House above. We call it Relax It’s Summertime. We borrowed a few shell decorations from the beach house that inspired us and carefully prepared our set.  Though the background looks as if it could be real white beach sand, it is actually a recycled ivory colored fleece blanket. Using an f-stop of 2.8 allows the background to blur very nicely with little need for background touch up, and allows the focal point, the kitten’s big beautiful eyes, to stand out.

Our featured rescue kitten is Lovey. She is as sweet as her name. She has been in our foster care since she was just 4 weeks old. She was brought to an adoption event by a little girl and her dad. They found her inside his truck’s wheel well in their front yard all alone. They could not care for her and asked Cats-Can, Inc. to help.  I was volunteering that day, taking photos of the cats and helping with adoptions. I couldn’t resist. I became her foster. Her warm brown tabby coloring matched our set very well.  She loved being inside the shell so much that she began falling asleep. She looked like she belonged, like a hermit crab in a shell.   Lovey is now over 8 weeks old now, big enough to leave foster care and find a furr-ever home.   She will be available for adoption this Saturday at Petsmart.

Photographic Details: Our Photographic Equipment used and settings are: Canon EOS 5D Mark III, Canon Macro 100 mm lens, available window light, f2.8, ss125, iso 100.

We photographed several kittens from the rescue and have a great variety of shots to share. Here are a few of them:

Summertime Beach TRIVIA:  There is a seashell named after kittens!   It is the colorful Atlantic kitten paw (Plicatula gibosa) seashell. It is a favorite to find along Florida beaches, especially the west coast of Florida in places like Sanibel Island.  The kitten paws are small and colorful with bumpy ridges that fan out like fingers.  Their color is usually a peach or coral orange, but can be reddish or yellow.  The raised bumps of color are marked with thin lines, while the base of the shell is whitish. They are small in size about one inch. The kittenpaw is a scallop.

“LuvKelly Kittens Recycles 2015″ Photo Shoot Tutorial Series” :  For the entire year of 2015, Kelly Richardson Images has chosen to create a monthly rescue kitten photo shoot with all natural materials and recycled items that can be found around the house. We are going green in an effort to raise community awareness for the planet earth and for the innocent kittens and cats that are in need of rescue. We hope to encourage our communities to recycle to help save the environment, save energy, and help reduce air pollution and greenhouse gasses that depletes the ozone layer of the earth; We hope to raise community awareness for kittens on death row in county shelters, and get help and support for the private rescue organizations that save them,  take them off death row, foster them with adequate supplies, attend to their medical needs and find them a furrr-ever home.

So far these are the featured monthly photo shoots we have done this year:

June Weddings – JUNE

Kitten Bride to be

It is June, the most popular month for weddings. Every year, millions of couples walk down the aisle and begin their new lives together. It is a big event that is accompanied by a big need for unique wedding greeting card designs. So it only seemed fitting for Kelly Richardson Images to use June Weddings as the theme for this month with the LuvKelly Recycles 2015 with rescue kittens.

To create this image for this theme, we recycled a family heirloom for this image: Kelly’s Victorian style drawstring bridal wedding purse lined with tiny pearls. Kelly’s grandmother gave this to her for her wedding over 15 years ago. Next we added beautiful floral head bands and hair ties borrowed from Kelly’s daughter. We used Burlap material in a creme color over a creme fleece for the background. The cute little rescue kitten above is Tom. His brother Jerry is pictured below. They loved playing on top of the cool, soft silk!

Please DM Kelly Richardson if you would like more information on how you can license these images to help support the LuvKelly cause. A portion of the proceeds goes directly back to help save and foster kittens from death row.

Winter Snow Hat – MAY

Christmas kitten bookmark

For MAY, we are featuring three rescue kittens in my daughter’s favorite winter snow hat.  The rescue kittens are Penny, Charlie and Pippa and believe it or not, they are all siblings. They have been in foster care since they were just three weeks old and are very much used to humans. They love to play and are very social and unafraid.  They enjoyed hanging out in our props and snuggling in the warmth of the snow hat.

The materials we used: I love this hat, because it is very soft, has great woven yarn texture and we could flip it upside down and hold the ties from above like a purse.  The kittens loved being in the soft, warm, comfy hat so much, they almost fell asleep during the shoot!  The creme color of the snow hat  made it purrr-fect for us to experiment with different colored backgrounds. We used old fleece blankets clipped to our backdrop in yellow, purple and blue.

In Pocket full of Love, our previous post, we showed how we used JEANS as our recycled, household, “natural green” material. We simply clipped a pair of my husband’s old favorite jeans to a backdrop stand and placed kitten in the back pockets.  Secondly, we cuffed the bottom of the jeans and placed kitten inside the boot legs.  Images from this photo shoot can be seen in the LuvKelly Denim Kitten Gallery.

Pocket full of love – APRIL

recycled items for photo shoots save rescue kittens

As winter comes to a close, and we begin to put our jeans and winter clothes away (some of us do in Florida anyhow, 91 degree today!) we chose to feature JEANS as our recycled, household, “natural green” material for this months photoshoot: APRIL – a blue jean pocket full of love. Luckily these new little foster kitten critters were only 1.4 pounds and tiny enough to fit inside the pocket of my husband’s favorite old jeans.  The Luvkelly Denim Blue jean kitten gallery has just been added to the image bank, so please have a look!

Meet Pippa, Carly and Penny, our newest foster rescue kittens.  This litter of three kittens was found on the side of a busy road in Orlando rush hour traffic in a box. A passerby driver said that the car in front of them pulled over and put the box on side of road, then left. He says he saw the mother jump out of box, and then get run over.  He pulled over, checked the box, found the three babies and called the rescue. These three sweet little girls have been with us since they were only ten days old and only 5 ounces, with eyes that just opened.  We have enjoyed being their mommy, bottle feeding them every few hours as they grew and grew.  Now they are fully weaned and over two pounds! They are just about ready to go to a furrr-ever home.   They are happy, loving and simply adorable!  All three are scheduled to be “vetted” and will be available for adoption April 18th!  Both Pippa and Penny have already been pre-adopted! Carly, the black kitten with white socks, is still available, and as you can see, she loved playing in the pockets and is very playful and frisky.   She is so cute,  funny and full of love.  She gives kisses and is very social. I will surely miss them, but have to make room to save more kitten’s lives!  KellyLOGOpink
